Nothing profound today. Just some random ramblings of a diseased mind.

1. Amadeus is one of my favorite movies. I think it's because all of the actors are speaking in their native accents and there is little or no attempt by the director to affect contrivance on anyone's speech or behavior. This is off-putting to some people, but I think it makes everyone seem more ordinary in their roles, as if they don't know they are in a 20th century costume drama. That lack of contrivance is something I aim for in everything I write.

2. Homemade pizza crust is stupidly easy to make, provided you have a decent counter-top mixer. And I think it's about as good as anything you'd buy in a restaurant (or at least 98% of them). In your mixer bowl combine 1 cup very warm tap water, 1 packet Fleischmann's yeast, and 1 Tbsp sugar. Let sit for 10 minutes. Add 1 Tsp salt, 1-2 Tbsp oil (olive or grapeseed), and 2 1/2 Cups flour, then mix for 5 minutes on low speed. Take the dough out and knead it on a heavily floured surface for a couple of minutes, then roll into a floured (or parchment-paper covered) pan and slap on your toppings. Bake at 450 for 18-20 minutes.

3. I heard the Selfie Stick referred to as a Narcisstick. This is the greatest brand name in history. On a related note, Cato the Elder said it best: "I would rather have men ask why there is no statue to commemorate me than why there is one".

4.Your outlook on life will be exponentially worsened the further you scroll down an online comment board.

5. My wife is the smartest person I know. I think she was Madame Curie in a previous life.

6. Lots of folks think raising two children is difficult as opposed to raising one. It's not. Granted, the first kid is hard. But the learning curve goes downhill after that.

7. 3001: The Final Odyssey was the most disappointing novel I ever read. It should have been subtitled: Arthur Clarke pays his mortgage. Inferno by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle was one of the most entertaining. Dante would have liked it.

8. I was shocked to recently learn that the late Jackie Gleason (my dad's favorite comedian) had one of the largest private collection of Fortean and Occult book collections in the world (currently held by the University of Miami). Mine is only about 10% of what his was and I thought it was big.

9. The Kraken is the coolest monster of all mythology. Medusa is a close second.

10. Every time I write a new story, I'm certain it's the greatest thing ever written. Once it's published, I'm sure it's the worst thing ever written. I think I'm normal in that respect.

This past weekend I saw my life flash before my eyes when my computer decided it didn't like my hard drive any more. A lot of writing went away (that I had yet to back up). Fortunately, I have recovered most of what I had lost (and subsequently backed it up), so I can get back to work. This blog may take a brief hiatus for the month of April while I get some work published. I'll keep everyone posted.

Until next time. Have a great week, everyone.
